#100 Blogfest Guest Post by Author Martin King

#100 Blogfest - Guest Post by author Martin King

Kids can be cruel sometimes, to anything. So it is regret I recall my childhood fetish for killing ants. No I didn’t murder them, I loved those little six-legged critters, they provided me with so much fascination and entertainment.
Have you ever watched that film called A Fistful of Dollars?
A stranger arrives at the little Mexican border town of San Miguel. It’s that film where a bitter feud exists between two families vying to gain control of the town. In rides a stranger (Clint Eastwood) and ends up being a gun for hire and watches as both sides wipe each other out.
Well one particular holiday (more than likely Wales because that is where we always went, but I can’t exactly remember), we travelled to a small town. We stopped in a caravan which was highly unusual for us as we always stopped in tents.
I remember so clearly hearing this loud rumble coming from the heavens and as I stepped out of the caravan seeing what I could only describe as an alien spaceship. It was immense and filled half the sky – later I found out it was what was known as a V-Bomber. But that is a different story, but why not Google it and see what they looked like, pretty impressive.
So like I say, I played the role of the stranger, on the one side of the camp site were the Rojo brothers (red ants) and on the other the sheriff and family (black ants). Well I learnt that if you got a few red ants and a few black ants, such was their hate for each other, they would fight until all that was left was a writhing tangle of disembodied limbs.
Now I thought this was amazing. What self respecting young boy wouldn’t? But a few casualties in one go wasn’t enough, I had smelt blood and I wanted more. So I discovered that by taking a few of the red ants to the black colony, helping them take out a few of the guards and helping them escape back to their nest, they were able to get all their brothers and uncles and cousins and army mates and bring the war back to the colony.
The ending was just like the film and I was the only one left standing!

Reaper "Mini Review" and My Soul To Steal Review

Title: Reaper (Soul Screamers #3.5)
Publication Date:  November 16, 2010
Published By: Harlequin Teen
Format: ebook, 50 pages

Tod Hudson was a typical teenager. He liked girls, sports, food and tolerated his younger brother, Nash. In fact, he had his whole life in front of him--and due to his bean sidhe heritage, it was going to be a very long life indeed. And then the car accident occurred.
Suddenly Tod's future wasn't so sure, and he had to make a choice. Life... Death... or something Between....

My Thoughts
This is a novella so the review will be as short and sweet as the book. I don't always care about novellas but in this case I has to read it because it's about Tod and told from his POV, and I'm a big Tod fan. True to Tod form even though the book is essentially about Tod's demise (which should be depressing) and him assuming the role of Reaper it's laced with tons of sarcastic humor and Tod-esque one liners, you even catch a glimpse of Kaylee. If your into the Souls Screamers this is a definite must read, you'll totally love it. 5 out of 5

P.S. You can download this novella for free from Rachel Vincent's website HERE

Title: My Soul To Steal (Soul Screamer #4)
Publication Date: January 4, 2011
Published By: Harlequin Teen
Format: paperback, 343 pages

*I purchased  this book

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.
See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.
And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

My Thoughts
This is longest book so far in the Soul Screamer series but I read it the fastest. The emotions were ramped up, the stakes were higher and it was tension all around but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I adore this series but it has always been more or less because of Tod and Nash, now I'm really starting to love Kaylee. I hated how the last book ended, with Nash being an addict and Kaylee breaking off the relationship, and as much as I hate to say this, I think it worked for her. Kaylee has defined herself  outside of her and Nash as a couple and become a better character for it. Despite the raging jealousy throughout the pages, Kaylee has become stronger and more adept at dealing with her enemies and problems independently. Even getting a laugh out of me a few times with her sarcastic comments almost equaling Tod's.
The new character Sabine grated on my nerves more than Kaylee's, quite a few times if it were possible I would have strangled her.  Despite her knack for making me see red she brought a lot to the story. I actually think being a Mara would be a pretty cool gig aside from creeping out everyone in a fifty foot radius.
The ending left  me with all kinds of questions and mixed emotions but these books always do. I think that's part of Rachel Vincent's writing charm. This is my new fave in the series but I'm sure that will change once I read If I Die. 5 out of 5!

Shadow Hills Review

Title: Shadow Hills
Publication Date: May 10, 2011
Published By: Egmont USA
Format: Paperback, 400 pages

*I purchased this book

After her sister Athena's tragic death, it's obvious that grief-stricken Persephone "Phe" Archer no longer belongs in Los Angeles. Hoping to make sense of her sister's sudden demise and the cryptic dreams following it, Phe abandons her bubbly LA life to attend an uptight East Coast preparatory school in Shadow Hills, MA — a school which her sister mysteriously mentioned in her last diary entry before she died.
Once there, Phe quickly realizes that something is deeply amiss in her new town. Not only does Shadow Hills' history boast an unexplained epidemic that decimated hundreds of its citizens in the 1700s, but its modern townies also seem eerily psychic, with the bizarre ability to bend metal. Even Zach — the gorgeous stranger Phe meets and immediately begins to lust after — seems as if he is hiding something serious. Phe is determined to get to the bottom of it. The longer she stays there, the more she suspects that her sister's untimely death and her own destiny are intricately linked to those who reside in Shadow Hills.

My Thoughts
I actually bought this book because Nina Malkin, The author of Swoon has a blurb on the cover, and we all know I love that book, she didn't let me down. I absolutely adored Shadow Hills. This story is awesome and original and that is hard to find in paranormal these days. There are new supernatural beings and even some new talents I have yet to encounter. There are also scientific explanations for some of what goes on making it more tangible and upping the creep factor.
I found Phe really impressive, I've become so used  to female characters automatically shutting down and going into fits of denial and disbelief at the first hint of something otherworldly or strange that Phe blew me away with her quick acceptance and desire to find truth. I found myself going into denial and making stupid excuses for her. I've been corrupted by wimpy female protagonists!!
The mystery aspect was played out really well, enough info given to keep you intrigued but als enough withheld to keep you on your toes. I was never far ahead of the characters in figuring stuff out and sometimes I was behind. The ending gave closure but also left an opening for more books so I checked the authors blog and there will be more, and I can't wait. Shadow Hills gets 5 out of 5!

Wicked Lovely Review

Title: Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely #1)
Author: Melissa Marr
Publication Date: June 12, 2010
Published By: Harper Teen
Format: Paperback, 328 pages

*I purchased this book

All teenagers have problems, but few of them can match those of Aislinn, who has the power to see faeries. Quite understandably, she wishes that she could share her friends' obliviousness and tries hard to avoid these invisible intruders. But one faery in particular refuses to leave her alone. Keenan the Summer King is convinced beyond all reasoning that Aislinn is the queen he has been seeking for nine centuries. What's a 21st-century girl to do when she's stalked by a suitor nobody else can see? A debut fantasy romance for the ages.

My  Thoughts
Wicked Lovely was an awesome book and depicted faeries exactly the way I like them,  dangerous, twisted and completely un-trustworthy. None of that glittery winged girl that loves flowers and feeds you morning dew crap. This book has and edgy, dark vibe that I fell in love with from the start. The descriptions are detailed making the scenery and characters vivid, and the book easy to fall in to.
Now with that out of the way, I am hopelessly in love with Seth. I mean I'm sweating this guy like a girl dressed in a one piece snowsuit jogging in Ecuador. Tall, lean, shaggy black hair, piercings and mysterious to boot. Aislinn is cool but for me everyone in the book pales in comparison to Seth. So, moving on, since your probably gagging by now.
The book has a few predictable moments but it didn't take away from the story. With a quick pace, interesting mythology and well developed characters Wicked Lovely was fun to read and has left me hungry for more Melissa Marr. I've already bought the second and third books in the series, Ink Exchange and Fragile Eternity. Her story writing is fantastic and I'm confident I won't be let down. I'm giving the book 5 out of 5.
