Fearscape Review

Title: Fearscape (The Devouring #3)
Author: Simon Holt
Publication Date: October 5, 2010
Published By: Little Brown
Format: Hardcover, 314 pages

Summary
The Vours: evil, demonic beings that inhabit human bodies on Sorry Night, the darkest hours of the Winter Solstice.
It's been a year since Reggie first discovered the Vours, and the Winter Solstice is approaching once again. It will be another night of unspeakable horror for those unlucky enough to be taken by the Vours, because this time, she won't be able to stop them. The Vours have imprisoned Reggie in a psychiatric hospital, where she is subjected to a daily routine of unfathomably sadistic experiments. Her life is a living Hell, but she won't give up. They attacked her brother. They killed her friend. And Reggie will never stop fighting back.

My Thoughts
An awesome end to an awesome series. Sometimes the final book in a series is disappointing and lackluster, but I love each and every one of these books and the last is no exception.
Reggie is the bravest and most selfless girl I've ever read. She never ceases to impress me. She stands strong in the face of unspeakable horrors and never to her own end. She will, and does absolutely everything she can to keep her family, friends and even complete strangers safe, sacrificing herself and her sanity in the process.
Aaron and Quinn both get to show new sides of themselves in Fearscape, both characters have endured a lot and come a long way since The Devouring, it's always fun to see characters grow and change through a series.
The plot in Fearscape as with the first two books is fast paced and totally engrossing. Holt always has a curve ball to throw at you that's completely unexpected and keeps you on your toes. This series is one of the most underrated I've read. More people need to give these books a shot and experience the creepy but thrilling world of the Vours. 5 out of 5.

My Teaser:

"Tumor," said a gruff voice. "Routine."

Oh, God, thought Reggie. NO! No, I'm not all the way under!
But neither the doctor nor the nurse could hear the screaming in her head.

Title: Everlasting (The Immortals #6)

Published By: St.Martin's Press
Format: Hardcover, 336 pages

*This book was purchased by me.

But their fight to be together will lead them into the most formidable terrain yet…into the dark heart of Summerland.
Here in a land of scorched earth and endless rain, Ever and Damen will discover their relationship’s hidden origins, expose a secret history they never imagined…and come face to face with the true reason fate keeps tearing them apart. Only then, when the final mystery is unraveled and the last secret revealed, Ever and Damen’s future will hinge on one ultimate decision that will put everything at stake….even eternity.

My Thoughts
Obviously I read this book because I read the other five, and just like the last three I wasn't overly impressed. Evermore and Blue Moon were both really good books and I found the series got a little boring after that. It seemed the same ideas were played out in a slightly different manner. This was no exception.
First Damen and Ever have never irritated me as greatly as they did in this book. Damen has always been stubborn and quick to blame himself for all their problems but it was kind of endearing, not true in Everlasting, he was stubborn to the point of blatant stupidity. So why, when he's given a chance at redemption does it take him so damn long to utilize it. The whole book he refuses see things in a different light and it drives me absolutely nuts. HELLO Damen, get with the program, You. Are. Wrong!
Ever just talks too much, you're waiting for details about the current situation to unfold, for her to shed some light on what's going on, and she rambles. Saying the same things over and over until you're about to shut the book and give up...Then and only then does she say something worth reading. Overall I think Damen and Ever strayed out of character so the story could be told a certain way, rather than it being their story it seemed forced.
In my opinion this series would have served better to be done in three, maybe four books, if you just couldn't compress the ideas and storyline, but I'm pretty confidant that you could. The series would have stayed exciting, upbeat and earned a much better review.
The book gets three stars because it's closure and I liked the very end of it. 3 out of 5.
P.S. Despite my not really enjoying this last installment I'll still miss Ever and Damen.

Crusade Review

Title: Crusade (Crusade #1)
Publication Date: May 3, 2011
Published By: Simon Pulse
Format: Paperback, 496 pages

*This book was purchased by me

Summary
For the past two years, Jenn has lived and trained at Spain's Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones. She is among the few who have pledged to defend humanity or die trying. But the vampires are gaining power, and the battle has only just begun.
Forced to return home after death takes a member of her family, Jenn discovers that San Francisco is now a vampire strong-hold. As a lone hunter apart from her team, Jenn is isolated—and at risk. She craves the company of her fighting partner, Antonio: his protection, his reassurance, his touch. But a relationship with Antonio comes with its own dangers, and the more they share of themselves, the more Jenn stands to lose.
Then Jenn is betrayed by one who was once bound to protect her, causing her to doubt all she had held as true. To survive, Jenn must find the courage to trust herself—and her heart.

My Thoughts
Crusade is a great book with a complex and intriguing plot. This is one of those books that should be made into an action movie. The action scenes remind me of movies like Blade, very intense the kind where your afraid to blink because you might miss something.
After a vampire named Solomon goes public the world turns into utter chaos. Some countries have claimed equal rights with vampires, some are trying to fight back, Some are fighting civil wars among themselves. This is how I imagine things going down if vampires were actually real, it's not pretty and some of it is just terrifying.
The book is told from multiple POV's, the team of hunters all trained in Salamanca Spain. They are all completely different from one another and intriguing in their own rights making the all the different view points really work to the advantage of the story. Jenn, the main character is a girl from California who wants to fight back against the vampires. She is a great fighter but has no confidence in herself. Skye is a white witch who joined the academy to hide from someone. Jamie is an Irishmen who joined to get revenge for the loss of his family. Holgar is a Danish werewolf, who's pretty mysterious, I didn't figure out his reason for being there. Eriko is a Japanese girl who lost her best friends to the vampires and Antonio is as far as anyone knows the only vampire fighting on the humans side.
I really enjoyed every aspect of this book, I think it can be read and loved by all ages. I'm giving Crusade 4 out of 5.

Follow Friday #10

Follow Friday is a weekly book meme hosted at Parajunkee's View!
This weeks question is:

Q. In light of the Summer Solstice. Also known as Midsummer...let's talk about fairies. What is your favorite fairy tale or story that revolves around the fae?

My favourite fairytale goes to Peter Pan, i'm a kid at heart. So the idea of Neverland and not having to grow up is pretty appealing.

My favourite book series about the fae would be Holly Black's The Modern Faerie Tales's series, there so dark and gritty. You really get to experience the deceptive and dangerous side of the fae. Not all glitter and gauzy wings after all!

Bleeding Violet Review

Title: Bleeding Violet
 Auhtor: Dia Reeves
Publication Date: January 5, 2010
Published by: Simon Pulse
Format: Hardcover, 454 pages

Summary
Hanna simply wants to be loved. With a head plagued by hallucinations, a medicine cabinet full of pills, and a closet stuffed with frilly, violet dresses, Hanna's tired of being the outcast, the weird girl, the freak. So she runs away to Portero, Texas in search of a new home.
But Portero is a stranger town than Hanna expects. As she tries to make a place for herself, she discovers dark secrets that would terrify any normal soul. Good thing for Hanna, she's far from normal. As this crazy girl meets an even crazier town, only two things are certain: Anything can happen and no one is safe.

My Thoughts
This book is strange. That is the one and only way I know how to describe it. The lead character Hannah is manic depressive and suffers from hallucinations. Her father dies and she finds the mother she never knew in a town full of crazy people. I'm not even sure what the actual story was even about, I don't know why a lot of the things that happened did. I guess the reason the book gets 3 stars is because how could I get bored when reading from the perspective of a a manic depressive who suffers hallucinations, it was intriguing to say the least. Besides that I'm confused. I'd say use your own discretion on this one, if it sounds good to you read it, if not don't. 3 out of 5.

Swoon Review

Title:  Swoon (Swoon #1)
 Author: Nina Malkin
Publication Date: May 18, 2010
Published By: Simon Pulse
Format: Softcover, 432 pages

*This book was purchased by me

Summary
Torn from her native New York City and dumped in the land of cookie-cutter preps, Candice is resigned to accept her posh, dull fate. Nothing ever happens in Swoon, Connecticut...until Dice's perfect, privileged cousin Penelope nearly dies in a fall from an old tree, and her spirit intertwines with that of a ghost. His name? Sinclair Youngblood Powers. His mission? Revenge. And while Pen is oblivious to the possession, Dice is all too aware of Sin. She's intensely drawn to him -- but not at all crazy about the havoc he's wreaking. Determined to exorcise the demon, Dice accidentally sets Sin loose, gives him flesh, makes him formidable. Now she must destroy an even more potent -- and irresistible -- adversary, before the whole town succumbs to Sin's will. Only trouble is, she's in love with him.

My Thoughts
Swoon was fantastic! It's YA for the grown-ups that love it. The story is bold, the love is refreshing and the characters are colorful and relateable.
The leading lady Dice tells her story in a way that you don't feel like your being told, you feel like you are there. It took me two days to read Swoon and I feel like I was in in Dice's story, living it for the last six months. (In a good way) From the summary the book sounds like almost every other paranormal romance YA book going. It's not. Dice and Sin have such a complex relationship, there are so many layers and emotions between them. It's not a cut and dry I love you, you love me sort of thing.
The story is also complex, there are so many characters and each has their own conflict no matter how small, that just feel so important to the story and atmosphere. So much happens in this book! I feel like anything I say is totally inadequate and can't convey the awesomeness found in these pages.
This is a MUST read, i want everyone to go read it, and I want everyone to love it as much as I did. A well deserved and enthusiastic 5 out of 5!

Children Of The Lost Moon Review and Giveaway!

Publication Date: June 3, 2010
Published By: Booklocker.com
Format: Paperback, 242 pages

Summary
Seventeen-year-old Savannah Henderson has but one dream - to hold the Olympic gold in saber fencing. A new fencing coach promises to make her Olympic dream a reality. However, he is not what he seems and she finds her life taking a bizarre, dangerous turn as she is thrust headlong into a war between two impossible, mythical species, one bent on destroying the human race, the other determined to protect it.

My Thoughts
This is one of those books where I looked at the  cover and thought "meh" but the inside was SO good. From the summary I got the idea I would be following a girl through an epic battle between two species where she was caught in the crossfire. Which happens but it's not what the book was centered around. The story was more character driven than plot driven and the budding romance between Savannah and Luke takes center stage.
Savannah is an admirable and lovable female lead. Savannah's parents are lead busy professional lives leaving little time for her, causing her to misplaced and lonely. She fills her time with fencing and Kendo making her a confident, independent and totally awesome lead character. She finds solace in Luke, and a place to belong in his huge family.
Luke is adorable, he is a total gentleman and always keeps Savannah in line. He ensures she follows curfew rules when she could care less and even make her study to keep her grades up. He even tries to pull the macho man "let me protect you" a few times but Savannah won't have it.
It takes a little while to get to the action and the conflict in the book, but unlike some other books you don't get bored waiting for it to show up. The story is still interesting and engaging when your not immersed in an intense moment. Children of The Lost Moon has a little bit of everything. It has action, adventure, mythology, romance, and friendship. It was a great read and I definitely recommend it. 4 out of 5.

Soulstice Review

Title: Soulstice (The Devouring #2)
Author: Simon Holt
Publication Date: June 7, 2010
Published By: Little Brown, Books for Young Readers
Format: Paperback, 272 pages

Summary
It's been six months since Reggie first discovered and fought against the Vours, malicious and demonic beings that inhabit human bodies on the eve of the Winter Solstice.
The Vours still haunt Reggie, but only in her dreams-until one night, when an unexpected visitor turns her nightmares into reality.
The battle against evil continues in Soulstice, the second book in the thrilling The Devouring series, which School Library Journal called, "Comparable to books by R. L. Stine and Stephen King....A must-have for horror fans."

* I've written this review assuming you've read The Devouring, if you haven't you may want to come back when you have to avoid any "spoiling."

My Thoughts
Soulstice seriousle ups the ante from The Devouring, it's not very often I like the second book in a series more than the first but in this case it is absolutely true. The plot became much more intricate, introducing new characters and secrets while expanding and deepening the ones you already know.
Reggie remains her strong willed and ass kicking self, enduring things I would never even imagine attempting. Always fighting for the people she care about and taking a beating on the way.  Aaron manages to work up a little more courage, less talk and more action. And Quinn...well I'll just let you read and figure that one out on your own.
The absolute best thing about these books is the myth building and imagery. The fearscapes Holt creates remind me of the movie Silent Hill. These alternate realities where fear reins and everything from people with no faces, shrieking porcelain dolls to a never ending maze of identical stalks of corn scare the crap out of you. I don't know about you but possession freak me right out, and the myth building in Soulstice makes it too believable, Holt even adds a scientific explanation not relying solely on the excuse of "Hey, it's paranormal. Anything can happen, right?" If you read The Devouring and liked it, read on friends, Soulstice is even better. 5 out of 5.

The Devouring Review

Title: The Devouring (The Devouring #1)
Author: Simon Holt
Publication Date: June 1, 2009
Published By: Little Brown
Format: Paperback, 256 pages

Summary
When Reggie finds an old journal and reads about the Vours, supernatural creatures who feast on fear and attack on the eve of the winter solstice, she assumes they are just the musings of some lunatic author. But soon, they become a terrifying reality when she begins to suspect that her timid younger brother might be one of their victims.
Risking her life and her sanity, Reggie enters a living nightmare to save the people she loves. Can she devour own her fears before they devour her?

My Thoughts
This was started and finished in less than a day. This story just sucked me into it's nightmare and wouldn't let me go. I don't read much horror and now I'm not sure why, it's fun to freak yourself out sometimes.
The world building was awesome and the characters were too. The "fearscape" in the story is the place where you live in your own nightmares and fears and the descriptions were vivid and creepy to say the least. A particular line from the books that had me wincing was "Reggie's gauzed hand ached like sensitive teeth slathered in ice cream." *shudders*  A macabre carnival was one of the settings and it's like every kids worst fears, hatchet wielding clowns, maggots in your candy apple.
Reggie's bravery and love for her little brother really warmed me to her.  Her best friend Aaron is eccentric and sweet. There are so many quotes and scenes I want to share but I won't, I'll leave you to discover them on your own. The Devouring was creeptastic, and a totally fun thrill ride so if you're into that kind of thing definitely check it out. So glad I bought the next installment Soulstice, I will be starting that promptly tomorrow. 4 out of 5!

Bite Club Review

Title: Bite Club (The Morganville Vampires #10)
Author: Rachel Caine
Publication Date: May 3, 2011
Published By: New American Library
Format: Hardcover, 340 pages

Summary
After discovering that vampires populate her town, college student Claire Danvers knows that the undead just want to live their lives. But someone else wants them to get ready to rumble.
There's a new extreme sport getting picked up on the Internet: bare- knuckle fights pitting captured vampires against each other-or humans. Tracking the remote signal leads Claire- accompanied by her friends and frenemies-to discover that what started as an online brawl will soon threaten everyone in Morganville...

My Thoughts
Oh Man, this is definitely the most emotional installment in The Morganville Vampires series. It had me all sorts of stressed out, there were numerous times where Mr. Shane Collins needed a serious beat down, and I was more than ready to deliver. Then there were the moments when all I wanted to do was cry, then Eve would come to my rescue and make me smile. Claire was fantastic as always the girl just has so much spunk you have to love her. She has to make some seriously tough decisions this time around but she made the right ones on all counts.
One little complaint the story really revolved around only a few of the huge cast of characters. Usually everyone manages to get their part in the story but I found myself missing some of them a little. The storyline was great, Rachel Caine always amazes me how she can write her characters out of ANY dilemma. No matter how much crap the Glass House quad gets into she always finds a way to get them out even though it seems completely hopeless to the reader, she's pretty brilliant that way.
Bite Club was totally awesome I highly recommend it, and every other book in the series. 5 out of 5. Only 4 months and 15 days until the next one, Last Breath GAH!!

Abandon Review

Title: Abandon (Abandon #1)
Author: Meg Cabot
Publication date: April 26, 2011
Published by: Point
Format: Hardcover, 320 pages

Summary
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.
But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.
Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

My Thoughts
Abandon disappointed me. It's a re-imagining of the Hade and Persophone myth, so the potential is there and it comes close but not quite. Pierce is a bit of a scatterbrain making the narrative hard to follow sometimes. The first three quarters of the book bounce back and forth between Pierce's take on the present and her re-hashing of the past without any transition. It's a bit off-putting.
Pierce and John are both likeable characters that are almost lovable. Alex and Kayla were great but weren't in that much of the story. The last quarter of the book the plot really picks up, questions get answered and John and Pierce start to acquire more depth. With that said I am confident I will enjoy the sequel Underworld more than I did Abandon. 3 out of 5.
