Shift Review

Title: Shift (Shade #2)
Author: Jeri Smith-Ready
Publication Date: May 3, 2011
Published By: Simon Pulse
Format: Hardcover, 367 pages

Summary
Aura’s life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can’t deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she’s not sure that she wants to.
Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.
As Aura’s search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart

My Thoughts
There is always a high expectation for book number two in a series, especially if you fall head over heels for book one. Which I absolutely did. Shade became one of my absolute favorite books and put Jeri Smith-Ready at the top of my awesome authors list. Shift blew my expectations out. Of. The. Water.
Shift is Shade kicked up a few hundred notches everything got more intense. The love triangle, the mystery surrounding the shift, aura's parentage...EVERYTHING. Seriously I would read this book just for the prom segment, SO much happens.
Jeri's writing is so honest and heartfelt. From dealing with the characters grief to the sexual aspects, even the humor of a teenager. It all comes out raw and real. Every character in the book has their own issues and emotions they're trying to overcome or confront, and you care about each of their struggles even if they aren't a main character. She has way of making you love and care about everyone. They all have such a strong presence. Like Megan and Mickey for example, their important but not forerunners in the story. That did not keep my heart from breaking when Megan finally voiced the battle going on inside her, concerning Mickey and coping with Logan's death. Everyone had their own moment where they put me through some emotional somersaults.
Anyway if I keep going secrets will be spilled and I'll probably just gush out every plot development and spoil the entire book. If you haven't read Shade, go do it. Then get Shift and bask in all it's glory because I did and I know I'll be doing it again...sometime soon. On a side note keep some tissues handy. I certainly needed them. 5 out of 5 obviously.

Blood Magic Review

Title: Blood Magic (The Blood Journals #1)
Author: Tessa Gratton
Publication Date: May 24, 2011
Published By: Random House
Format: ARC, 405 pages

Summary
This page-turning debut novel will entice fans who like their paranormal romances dark and disturbing. It's a natural next-read for fans of Stephanie Meyer, Carrie Jones, and Becca Fitzpatrick. But instead of mythical creatures, blood magic has everything to do with primal human desires like power, wealth, and immortality.
Everywhere Silla Kennicott turns she sees blood. She can't stop thinking about her parents alleged murder-suicide. She is consumed by a book filled with spells that arrives mysteriously in the mail. The spells share one common ingredient: blood, and Silla is more than willing to cast a few. What's a little spilled blood if she can uncover the truth? And then there's Nick—the new guy at school who makes her pulse race. He has a few secrets of his own and is all too familiar with the lure of blood magic. Drawn together by a combination of fate and chemistry, Silla and Nick must find out who else in their small Missouri town knows their secret and will do anything to take the book and magic from Silla.

My Thoughts
What a great story. I didn't find myself flying through pages in outright excitement nor did I laze through them in disinterest. I read through this book at a leisurely pace, because it was such a satisfying book to read. I didn't want to get to the end.
The plot unwound at a steady pace, letting you in on the secrets bit by bit. All the characters lives have intertwined with each other over such a long period of time causing a tangled mess of lies, love and deceit, you can't help getting lost in it and dying to know how it all unfolds. One of my favorite things is how Josephine's diary entries let you in on her secrets from the past so you could apply the knowledge to what you know of Silla and Nick's present. And the magic was just plain old awesome.
There are few books where I actually enjoy multiple POV's but in Blood Magic it definitely works to it's advantage. There are just so many things that wouldn't have made sense if you were reading from Silla's the entire time. I really liked Silla though, she's resilient and a little strange. The way she wears metaphorical theater masks when she wants to slip into the emotion she thinks will help her best deal with a situation was pretty cool. Nick is just adorable, he's from Chicago and gets moved to this tiny little hick town. He's out of his element and has a dry sense of humor, you really can't help but love him. I really enjoyed everyone in this book for their own reasons. I couldn't even hate Josephine, she's a crazy "witch" but she has her reasons.
The very best part...this book is part of a series so I know I'll get to read more, and I can't friggin wait. Blood Magic gets a huge, enthusiastic 5 out of 5!!

* I won this book in a giveaway on the authors blog. Thank you Tessa :)

Follow Friday #6

It's Follow Friday WooHoo!! If you want to join the fun hit the pic above to go to Parajunkee's blog!

This weeks Question is

How many books do you read in a week? And in what format do you read them, or listen to them?

I am a physical book kind of girl. I will read an ebook but I would prefer not to. Theres just something about turning the pages. The sound a hardcover makes when you open it for the first time. The beautiful covers you get to admire. The awesomness of having stacks upon stacks of books on your shelves, the smell......
OK, back to the question I was getting a bit lost in bookish land there. Hardcover or softcover it really just comes down to price most of the time. With my usually 4-5 book a week reading habit I take a discount wherever I can get it. Jeez what a rant ;)

Have a fantabulous friday friends!!

Bone Dressing Review

Publication Date: April 20, 2011
Published By: Savage Enterprises
Format: Paperback, 360 pages

*This book was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review

Summary
TIME IS RUNNING OUT … THE DARK THAT’S BEEN CHASING SYD FOR MANY LIFETIMES HAS FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH HER … Sydney Roberdeau lost her parents as a young girl. Waiting for her life to start and the freedom that will come with her eighteenth birthday, Syd spends much of her time haunting the local cemetery. It is there, stretched out among the dead, that she feels most alive, most at home. Until one rainy night when Beau, Sarah and T.J. crash her ghostly sanctuary, appearing out of nowhere, turning her already inside-out world one degree past upside down. Syd must now revisit past lives, dressing in the bodies of her previous selves … bone dressing. Her only chance to outrun the evil breathing down her neck is to face her own worst nightmares and her strongest desires. But if she can’t stay out of trouble in this life, how can she possibly fix mistakes from past lives? And just how many lives has she lived, loved and lost? What is Syd exactly, and what will she risk for the life of a man she doesn’t remember, the man she spent a lifetime with, the man she loves? Everything … including her very own life? Bone Dressing, the first in a series of seven books, will carry Syd and Beau on an adventure that transcends life itself.

My Thoughts
Bone Dressing started off sort of confusing. Syd (the MC) is very distracted and confused which left me trying to get my bearings in the book. But then Syd meets Beau in the cemetery, and the book sucked me in and didn't spit me back out till the end.
After the fateful meeting in the bone yard the plot just takes off leaving you page turning like a mad man trying to find out what's next. Syd is a strong and endearing character struggling to make sense of her life and her purpose in it, little does she know she has more then one life to figure out. You can't help but feel everything she feels. The way Ms.Brooks writes is lyrical and heartfelt leaving you clinging to her every word. I even had to take an intermission to clear my blurry eyes and start reading again.
A lot of the paranormal elements that came into play were unexpected but I loved them and they added new dimensions to the story. I've never seen the soulmate idea played out this way before but I really enjoyed it, It seemed more real and possible. One complaint, I still have so many unanswered questions!! Guess I have to wait for the next installment. Anyway I could gush for hours about all the reasons I enjoyed this book but in the interest of not spoiling every detail and letting you read it yourself I'll just end it here. Bone Dressing was a fantastic and engaging read and I totally recommend it. 5 out of 5

Waiting On Wednesday

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Author: Melissa Walker
Publication Date: July 29, 2011
Published By: Bloomsbury

Lacey Anne Byer is a perennial good girl and lifelong member of the House of Enlightenment, the Evangelical church in her small town. With her driver's license in hand and the chance to try out for a lead role in Hell House, her church's annual haunted house of sin, Lacey's junior year is looking promising. But when a cute new stranger comes to town, something begins to stir inside her. Ty Davis doesn't know the sweet, shy Lacey Anne Byer everyone else does. With Ty, Lacey could reinvent herself. As her feelings for Ty make Lacey test her boundaries, events surrounding Hell House make her question her religion.

Melissa Walker has crafted the perfect balance of engrossing, thought-provoking topics and relatable, likable characters. Set against the backdrop of extreme religion, Small Town Sinners is foremost a universal story of first love and finding yourself, and it will stay with readers long after the last page.

This book doesn't have paranormal anything in it which is what I generally read, but I do LOVE love, and the title and cover are just plain attention grabbing, am I right?

Personal Demons Review

Title: Personal Demons (Personal Demons #1)
Publishication Date: September 14, 2010
Published By:  Tor Teen
Format: Paperback, 365 pages

*This book was purchased by me

Summary
Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She has spent years keeping everyone at a distance—-even her closest friends—-and it seems as if her senior year is going to be more of the same . . . until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can’t seem to stay away from him.
What she doesn’t know is that Luc is on a mission. He’s been sent from Hell itself to claim Frannie’s soul. It should be easy—-all he has to do is get her to sin, and Luc is as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn’t stand a chance. But he has to work fast, because if the infernals are after her, the celestials can’t be far behind. And sure enough, it’s not long before the angel Gabriel shows up, willing to do anything to keep Luc from getting what he came for. It isn’t long before they find themselves fighting for more than just Frannie’s soul.
But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay . . . for all of them

My Thoughts
I don't know how I missed this book for as long as I did. I'm so glad I finally bought it beacuse I really enjoyed reading it.
First off I love unexpected plot twists, and there were a couple here. I think it's just so much better when your thinking, "Ok, I already know where this is headed," then something crazy happens and the book goes in a new direction, bringing the excitement back to the book.
When I saw the cover I was thinking it has your average damsel in distress struggling to choose between her saviors, not true. Frannie is totally different. First, she isn't helpless, the girl has a black belt in Judo. Second, she's put in this position because of the awesome power she possesses (not telling what it is). Also she's not aware of their actual intentions for a lot of the book, so the boys don't get the added charm of savior in her eyes for quite a while.
As for the boys, they're nothing alike so you can love them both for different reasons. Luc is a total bad boy. Complete with bad boy car and attitude. Gabe is the guy who is the perfect best friend but too damn hot to keep in the friend zone. In Frannie's shoes I'm positive I never would have made a choice, I'd ride that situation out as long as possible.
I don't really have much to complain about here, a few small things i guess. Gabe wasn't nearly as present as I think he should have been. Also what's with Frannie's parents, their "feelings" they get around the boys. Something was hinted at there but never explained. There's also a lot of details on the inner workings of Hell and it's creatures but not so much on Heaven, but maybe that's been saved for the sequel. I guess I'll find out. Overall Personal Demons gets 4 out of 5.

Soul Thief (The Demon Trappers #2)
By Jana Oliver
Expected Publication date August 30, 2011

Riley's beginning to think being a demon trapper isn't all it's cracked up to be. Her dad's been stolen by a necromancer, her boyfriend's gone all weird and she's getting warm and fuzzy feelings for someone who's seriously bad news. It's tempting to give it all up and try to be normal, but that's not an option. Because the demons have plans for Riley. And they're not the only ones.

I absolutely loved The Demon Trappers Daughter, I actually started my blog about a week after reading it. I can't wait to read Soul Thief.

Bittersweet Review

Title: Bittersweet (Bittersweet #1)
Author:  Marcia Colette
Publication Date: March 2, 2011
Published By: Dusk Till Dawn Books
Format: ebook

*provided to me by the author for review

Summary
Phaedra Thorne's goals in life are simple. Make it to eighteen so she can legally adopt her sister and hope she never becomes like her deranged mother who secretly lives in the attic. They're not the normal hopes and dreams of a kid her age, but then again, Phaedra is anything but typical. Schizophrenia and psychokinesis go hand in hand in her genes. With things always upending or blowing up around her, she's already halfway there and horrified one of these days she'll be the next to go insane.
Five years have passed since Phaedra has seen her older, estranged brother. She's hesitant about his return and even more so when he comes bearing a cure for their mother. However, this so-called antidote, having sex with an incubus, comes with a catch that's larger than the statutory rape implications. The incubus who's willing to help the Thornes has unwittingly been followed by beings who call themselves hags. They want to drain the demon dry of his power and don't care if they threaten Phaedra's desire to have a normal family. She'll do whatever it takes to protect her loved ones, even if that means trusting her uncontrollable powers won't kill everyone in the process.

My Thoughts
My favorite thing about this book was definitely Phaedra, she's heavy on the sarcasm and stubborn as a mule. Her sharp tongue and quick wit made her easy for me to love. Though she has enough vulnerability to keep her from being obnoxious. Her powers are unpredictable and not easily controlled which makes her dangerous to be around. She was also forced to grow up before her time, with her Mom incoherent most of the time she's left to run the house and take care of her little sister Nadia. So outside of family she doesn't have any close relationships, and even those are strained.
Downsides? Bittersweet was a little confusing at first. You could tell the plot was working it's way up to something, i just couldn't figure out what. Then all kinds of craziness was let loose. It reminded me of one of those movies where you have a bunch of seemingly random events all intertwine throughout the plot then come together seamlessly in then end. So what you think was random and made no sense totally did. I was also really hoping for a little more blossoming romance between Phaedra and Logan. I love love and I wish there was a little more of it.
All together I liked reading from Phaedra's perspective and the story overall was really different from any other paranormals I've read. Bittersweet gets 3 out of 5.

Ultraviolet Review

Title: Ultraviolet

Publication Date: September 1, 2011
Published By: Orchard
Format: galley

Summary
Once upon a time there was a girl who was special.
This is not her story.
Unless you count the part where I killed her.
Sixteen-year-old Alison has been sectioned in a mental institute for teens, having murdered the most perfect and popular girl at school. But the case is a mystery: no body has been found, and Alison's condition is proving difficult to diagnose. Alison herself can't explain what happened: one minute she was fighting with Tori -- the next she disintegrated. Into nothing. But that's impossible. Right?

My Thoughts
I couldn't finish this book and i don't want to give it a bad review but in the interest of honesty, here goes. I felt like i was reading in circles. The writing was good and the descriptions very detailed but the exciting moments that keep you page turning were too far and few between for me to want to continue. This doesn't happen very often, I have an insatiably curious personality so generally the fact that I've started a book will keep me reading it. All i could think about was just reading something different. I've read quite a few reviews for this book and it's getting a lot of praise, so maybe it's just not my kind of book. The book gets one star simply because i didn't see it through to the end.

A playful grin crossed his face and he lifted a hand and rubbed a finger across her cheek, leaving a light, silvery streak.
"Hey!"

Follow Friday #4

Follow Friday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Parajunkee over at Parajunkee's View.
This weeks question is:
What character in a book would you most like to be? Most like to date?

If i could be any character in a book i'd be Finley Jane from The Girl In The Steel Corset, she is just too BADASS, beautiful and tough as nails.
Who would i most like to date? This was hard for me deciding between Jace Wayland from The Mortal Instruments and Will Herondale from Clockwork Angel. Will eventually won. I know, i know he can be a total douchebag but i apparently am a sucker for a work in progress and he's hot to boot!
(Jace is also biologically a Herondale so maybe it's a family thing ;) )

Released Review

Tillte: Released (Agents of Evil #1)
Author: Megan Duncan
Publishing Date: April 1,2011
Published By: CreateSpace
Format: ebook

*provided to me by the author for review

Summary
After a demon apocalypse kills their parents and everyone they know, 17-year old Abby Phillips, her brother, Carter, and friend, Max flee their home to travel through what has become the wastelands of America. When radio transmissions of a resistance offering shelter and safety cease, Abby is tempted to give up. Struggling to overcome life-threatening obstacles in their dangerous journey, Abby and her companions quickly discover there are much worse things lurking in the dark then they could have ever imagined.

My Thoughts
I'm going to start with the things i loved about this book. First off Abby, she's tough and determined, a great protagonist. She is the glue holding their small troupe of survivors together. I'd definitely want her shot gun slinging awesomeness on my side in a post apocalyptic demon infested world. The story kept a good pace and kept me interested.
What I didn't like about the book is I feel like I could've connected better to the characters and their struggle had I been their when the demon apocalypse started, not 4 months after the fact. Even a little more back story on Taya would have been good, it's like she didn't exist before they found her. Also i'm not really clear on exactly what caused all of this, some theories are tossed around but no really solid answers, but maybe that was the authors intention. It is the first in a series so maybe those answers are coming. It was entertaining and gritty and i do plan on reading book two. 3 out of 5

Invincible, Chronicles Of Nick Review

Publication Date: March 22, 2011
Published By: St.Martin's Griffin
Format: Hardcover, 420 pages

*purchased by me

Summary
Nick Gautier’s day just keeps getting better and better. Yeah, he survived the zombie attacks, only to wake up and find himself enslaved to a world of shapeshifters and demons out to claim his soul.
His new principal thinks he’s even more of a hoodlum than the last one, his coach is trying to recruit him to things he can’t even mention and the girl he’s not seeing, but is, has secrets that terrify him.
But more than that, he’s being groomed by the darkest of powers and if he doesn’t learn how to raise the dead by the end of the week, he will become one of them...

My Thoughts
I only gave Invincible 3 stars. Not because it wasn't a great book, it was, it just took to long to really get to the meat of the story. There was a lot of character building which is fun and important but there wasn't much else going on. It was like 200 pages of expanding new and already established characters. When the plot really started to pick up and get juicy, it ended. I guess thats a good set up for the next book in the series though because now i'm dying to know what happens next. Coolest thing about this book is it picked up exactly where it left off in Infinity. Like exactly, you could easily make this one huge book with no lag time. I enjoy that approach better then the next book being say six weeks or six months later. You feel more involved with the story because you were never outside of it. You are there when everything happens, theres no rehashing of details you missed between books. That being said it was an enjoyable read and i'm excited for Infamous the next title in the series. 3 out of 5

Theme Thursday

Theme Thursdays is a fun weekly event that will be open from one thursday to the next. Anyone can participate in it. The rules are simple:
- A theme will be posted each week on Thursdays
- Select a conversation/snippet/sentence from the current book you are reading
- Mention the author and title of book along with your post
- It is important that the theme is conveyed in the sentence (you don't necessarily need the word)

This weeks theme is...
Description of a woman/girl...

"Close your mouth sug. Pa only bites those who bare their teeth first." He turned at the soft, lightly accented voice to find what had to be one of the most gorgeous women he'd ever seen. Tall, blond, and built with the kind of curves men dreamed about, she wore a black Sanctuary t-shirt that was tight enough to make him really uncomfortable"
