Summary
Jael Thompson has never really fit in. She’s changed schools too many times to count. The only family she’s ever known is her father, a bitter ex-priest who never lets her date and insists she attend the strictest Catholic school in Seattle. And her mother—well, she was a five thousand year old demon. That doesn’t exactly help.
But on her sixteenth birthday, her father gives her a present that brings about some unexpected changes. Some of the changes, like strange and wonderful powers and the cute skater boy with a knack for science, are awesome. But others, like the homicidal demon seeking revenge on her family? Not so much.
Steeped in mythology, this is an epic tale of a heroine who balances old world with new, science with magic, and the terrifying depths of the underworld with the ordinary halls of high school.

My Thoughts
I'll admit it's taken me almost a week to read this book, that's highly unusual for me. The first 100 pages kind of bored me, though I'm thinking that may be my own fault and not the writers. The first bit there is a lot of explaining and plot building and most of it revolves around a lot of different religions and myths, I'm not well versed in either of these things, I know enough to get me through. So I'm thinking where some people would have thought, "Oh, right. Yeah I get what he's saying." I didn't. Once all that was out of they way and the story started to flow and take on a life of it's own, I couldn't stop reading. I was up til 3:40 last night and I look like it.
Just like the beginning of the story I found Jael boring until she got her demon prowess back, then she became interesting, even developing a snarky attitude which I enjoyed. My fav character in this book goes to Rob though, hands down. He's sweet, quirky, he's a skateboarder and he makes me smile...often.
The author tackles a lot of philisophical musings and he's got some really interesting explanantions and ideas for the Why's and What's of life. There's also some interesting mash-up of gods, goddesses and other creatures from different religions and beliefs. There were a few parts of the book where I got a little squeamish, even a little scared. Overall this books is really interesting to read and I'm glad I did,. Even if it didn't start out that way. 4 out of 5.

  2. I having been working on this one for a week and am also having issues with the first part of the book. I'm only on page 66 or so. While I understand what he's trying to get at, I'm not so sure I am on board with it. That's just me, though. I'm glad to know that it picks up, however. I need some encouragement so I can finish it.

  3. Interesting. I admit, I'm intrigued by the idea of the ex-priest father...especially since her mother is apparently a 5,000 year old demon? Now, there's an interesting family history!

Might have to track this one down, slow start or not...

  4. I have a hard time starting out with most NetGalley or e-books, but I think I'll definitely request this one. The premise sounds intriguing and so does the mish-mash of gods, goddesses, and religions you mentioned. Great review. :)

  5. I think I have this one down on my TBR list. Now I'll be prepared for a slow beginning but at least it gets better. Thanks for the warning.
